The Gay Spot: monthly webinar series

Why “The Gay Spot” ?

Ruth Ellis, black lesbian pioneer, died in October 2000, aged 101. Ellis & her lifelong partner, Ceciline “Babe” Franklin, moved to Detroit in 1937. From the 40s to the 60s, the couple’s house was known as the ‘Gay Spot’. Black same-sex couples were not welcome at white gay bars, nor were they welcome at black straight clubs. Their home gave the community a place to dance, sing and socialise.
